What Couples Need To Know Before Moving In Together

So you think you're ready to move in together. I mean, sleepovers every night, cooking dinner together, decorating a new space, sounds exciting, right? As fun and exciting, it is to move in with your significant other there are a few things you need to take into consideration before jumping right into it.

What couples need to know before moving in together

Hi friends!

If you're new around here, I recently moved in with my boyfriend. It's been a little over 3 months now since I have moved in and although there have been some bumps along the way, it has been great so far! This move was pretty quick and unexpected and if you want to know more details on our living situation I broke it all down in this blog post.

I know everyone has their own opinions on when the right time is to move in with your significant other but I think at the end of the day you have to do what you feel is right and when both of you feel you are ready. For me personally, I've known that I wanted to live with my significant other for a bit before we would decide to take the next step of considering marriage just to know beforehand if we would be the right fit. The topic of living together has been brought up casually in our relationship, but it was something we didn't have on our radar until further down the line for a variety of reasons... until COVID happen. With the pandemic and a variety of other factors, our timeline of moving in together got a bit sped up than we had planned (and sooner than what my parents were expecting, lol sorry mom and dad), but it all ultimately worked out in the end.

As exciting as it was to plan to move in together, it is a big step to take and there were quite a few things we had to take into consideration such as finances, ground rules, how are we going to deal with arguments, personal space, etc. Even though we still have a lot to learn and adjust to with living together, I thought I'd share some tea on what it's like moving in with your significant other, what to know beforehand, and things you should discuss and consider before making the move.

THE WHY

WHY are you moving in together? Are you ready to take the next step in your relationship? For financial convenience? Your lease is up at your apartment in the middle of a global pandemic and your hours got cut so you can't afford a place of your own and haven't had time to find a new roommate? Ok, maybe that last one only applied to me, but whatever the reasoning is, you need to make sure the both of you are ready to sit down and be on the same page because once you move in together it's going to be hard to decide you two can't live together and still be together.

HAVE A PLAN IF THINGS GO SOUTH

Ok, ok, I know no one wants to talk about the possibility of breaking up, but you have to protect yourself just in case. You never know and it's better safe than sorry. Make sure your name is on the lease. Have an agreement of how long you have to move out if you break up, which items are yours if you purchased them together, what happens to the pets if you got one while living together, etc. It's not the most romantic part of moving in, but it needs to be done just in case.

THE MONEY TALK

The topic of money and finances is always a tricky and awkward one, but if you plan on moving in together, it's going to happen. I will say, growing up in my family, the topic of finances and money was always such an open dinner table topic that I just got used to and comfortable discussing it, but I know that's not always the case for people.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • How are you going to pay for rent, bills, and expenses? Are you going to split it?
  • What's your budget? How much are you wanting to spend on rent?
  • Are you going to combine your finances?
  • How are you going to handle shared expenses such as groceries and household items?
  • Are you going to split the cost of furniture or split up who contributes what?

THE CLEANING SITUATION

Are you going to split them 50/50? Have a chore chart or cleaning schedule? Is one partner contributing more to the rent and you're compensating your part with labor? What about the laundry? In many cases, there is one partner who likes their space cleaner than the other. You may be used to living in organized clutter and waiting to wash all of your dishes at the end of the week, but if your partner is the exact opposite you will have to find some kind of middle ground. At the end of the day, you're a team, and living together requires some compromise to satisfy both sides.

I will have to admit, we're still haven't perfected this one. Naturally, I'm more of an organized clean freak at all times, and Christian likes to do one major deep clean every couple of months. We did work out at the beginning that I would be responsible for all of our laundry if Christian took care of the bathroom. Because if you know me, I'd much rather fold a pile of clothes than have to scrub a toilet. As for dishes and the kitchen, Christian usually cooks all of our meals and I clean which we figured is a fair trade-off. Ultimately you have to figure out a system that works the best for the two of you and what you deem is a fair trade-off.

ARGUMENTS WILL HAPPEN AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM

For some reason, the topic of couples arguing in a relationship seems so taboo. Couples argue it happens, it's normal and quite frankly healthy. Now, if you're constantly arguing at all hours of the day and it's getting toxic... that's a different story. But, back to healthy arguments. There will be times you will disagree with one another and if you're like me, you no longer can hop into your car and drive home to your apartment and cool off.

What I've learned is communication is key. Do you need to take a minute and cool off before taking it out? Do you need it to be resolved right then and there? Once Christian and I learned how each other likes to cope during heated arguments, resolving them got a little easier. What I also think that's helped us was when we first decide to live together we made a ground rule of making sure we resolve our issue/arguments before we go to sleep. Nothing is worse than navigating a shared space and trying to ignore each other.

PRIVACY WILL NOW BE A THING OF THE PAST

Don't get me wrong, essentially having a sleepover together every night is fun and all, but gone are the days where you can run and lock yourself in your room after a long stressful day. Mine now becomes ours and the only privacy you really have now is going to the bathroom. Especially with quarantine, we've both been spending a lot of time at home and we tend to butt heads here and there with being around each other so much. It's important to still be mindful of each other's space and give them time to be alone every now and then.

YOU HAVE TO KEEP ACTIVELY DATING EACH OTHER

Sounds weird, I know. I mean, you're moving in together so you obviously like each other, but keeping up the romance is trickier than you may think. You get comfortable, your Saturday nights out become movie nights in, and the only time they see you each other looking decent is when they come home from work. It's important to keep dating each other and plan for date nights outside of the house. It'll prevent you from making your relationship go stale.

YOU'LL LEARN A LOT ABOUT EACH OTHER

Good or bad, you'll learn a lot about each other once you live together. How they deal with stress, their little quirks, bad habits, etc. For some this experience can be an eye-opening experience that makes them realize they are maybe not the best fit for each other in the long run while for others this will make them grow stronger together.

Whew, I think that about covers the good gist of it! Making the decision to live together is an exciting phase in a relationship, but it is important to know all of the factors beforehand to properly prepare and plan things out to avoid potential bumps in the road. I hope you all have found this helpful and let me know down below if you live with your significant other as well as any tips you may have! Be sure to follow me on Instagram to see more peeks into our day to day life living together.

I hope you all have a great week and as always, thank you for reading!

xoxo,

Amy

Lilly At Home: 2 Work From Home Outfit Ideas

Raise your hand if you've just been rotating from one oversized t-shirt to another for your work from home looks for the past six months. Guilty.

Lilly Pulitzer Work From Home outfits

With COVID I know many of us have been transitioning to working from home these past few months. For me personally, I was quarantined for two weeks after I came home from my Peru trip and was working from home and when my two weeks were up, stay at home orders in North Carolina had taken effect. I have gone back to the office part-time now since mid-May, but for days where I am working from home, I still find myself reaching for my usual comfy oversized t-shirts and shorts.

Lately, I've been really trying to push myself to get a little more done up for my workday in hopes that it would help boost my mood and productivity, and so far it's been helping a bit! I think the act of physically changing out of your pajamas into something else just switches your brain from relaxation mode to work mode. With COVID I, unfortunately, haven't been able to break out a lot of my favorite Lilly Pulitzer pieces, but have been getting some use out of my more casual Lilly pieces. Here are two of my go-to Lilly at Home outfits I have been wearing for my work from home days!

1. Luxletic Leggings + Pullover

Lilly pulitzer work from home outfits
Lilly Pulitzer Work From Home Outfits

This is a pretty typical work from home look for me: comfy leggings and a pullover. Lilly makes the SOFTEST leggings and of course in such bright fun prints. For my job, the dress code is already very casual and I don't have to log in for zoom calls which is nice. So it's pretty nice that I get to roll out of bed, transform myself into a highlighter, and hop on my computer for work!

2. Rylie Dress

For days where I want to get a little more dressed up, this Rylie dress has been my go-to. It feels like I'm wearing an oversized sweatshirt and I don't have to wear pants. A total win. I usually throw on this dress with a pair of converse for grocery runs, but for WFH days I usually pair this with my favorite fuzzy slippers.

lilly Pulitzer after party sale 2020

Before we jump into my picks for this year's sale, I want to quickly say that by no means am I saying you need any of these items. I've covered the APS every year since 2015 and although it's my favorite sale of the year to share with you all, my intention is to never push you all to purchase anything that you don't want or need. The sale is exciting and there are a lot of good deals, but please keep in mind at the end of the day it's just clothes, there will always be more sales and you don't need to purchase anything if you're not in the right place financially. And that's OK!

As a quick reminder, remember everything in the sale is final sale! Also, shipping is free with a $25 purchase! Lilly Pulitzer is also planning to another round of new arrivals tomorrow, Tuesday, September 15th as well!  Now to jump into this year's picks:

Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale Fall 2020 Announcement

The juice has been spilled, the date for the most colorful sale of the year is here!

As many of you know, I'm a big Lilly Pulitzer fan and the After Party Sale is something us Lilly lovers look forward to twice a year. If you're not familiar, the Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale is a sale Lilly Pulitzer hosts twice a year marking down all of their past season's pieces. The reason why this is such a big deal is that Lilly doesn't have a sale section and doesn't do sales outside of the APS. If you want to know more in-depth about the sale I wrote a whole post on what exactly the sale is, FAQs, and what to expect.

Here are the quick details for this year's sale:

SALE DATES:

September 14, 2020 at 8:00am - September 15, 2020 11:59pm

HOW TO SHOP:

The sale is ONLINE ONLY this year, but you can shop in-store at some Lilly Pulitzer signature stores with some of them doing early in-store access today and tomorrow. Lilly Pulitzer corporate stores will not be hosting any in-store sales.

Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale 2020

HOW DOES THE SALE WORK:

Once you go onto the Lilly Pulitzer website Monday morning around 8:00am (ish, sometimes they're off by a few minutes, but it's worth it!!) you'll be placed in a virtual line. Once you're in the line they'll give you an estimated time of when you'll be able to access the sale. Once you're in line, do not refresh your page as you will be placed in the back of the line.

Also, keep in mind, it's not worth it to have multiple tabs on your laptop open to hold different spots in line. The line system goes by your IP address and it'll just be showing you the same spot in line if you do so. If you'd like to hold different spots in line, I'd advise you to log in on various devices such as your laptop, tablet, phone, significant other's phone... etc.

WHAT SHOULD I BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR:

Some styles that you can pretty much expect in the After Party Sale are Elsa Silk Tops, Callahan Shorts, Mila Shift Dresses, Popovers, and Donna Rompers. The sale includes prints and styles from past seasons, but it is important to note that the styles and prints you currently see online will not be included in the sale.

For more tips and tricks for tackling the sale, be sure to check out this blog post I wrote last year breaking it all down!

Fall Amazon Fashion Finds

Fall Amazon Fashion Finds

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

Now that Labor Day is over it seems that fall is on everyone's mind now. Even though I had to see the long summer days come to an end soon, it'll be nice to have a change in pace with fall. I'm actually looking forward to cooler weather and maybe will even try to get outside more now that I don't have to worry about sweating my booty off within the first five minutes of being out.

To kick off the fall season, I thought it'd be fun to round up some of my favorite Amazon Prime fall picks! This is a mix of some items that I personally owned as well as some items I've been eyeing this fall. Check out my sizing reviews for the pieces I already own down below!

Striped Colorblock Sweater c/o

SIZE: M

FIT: True to size

REVIEW: This sweater is super cozy and was sent to me last year to review. The bell sleeve is such a fun touch and I love the bright colors in it. I will say, the quality isn't the best. I have washed this quite a few times and you can definitely see some wear on it after a few months.

Daily Ritual Tunic Sweater

Daily Ritual Tunic Sweater

SIZE: M

FIT: True to size

REVIEW: This sweater is super soft and I can definitely see myself wearing it all fall/winter. It comes in several different colors, and this color, in particular, is less than $13! It's a nice long tunic length that will be great paired with leggings or can be tucked into a pair of jeans.

Lavender Knit 2 Piece Set

Lavender 2 Piece Set

SIZE: M

FIT: Runs half a size large

REVIEW: I was totally influenced by Tomi of GoodToMicha on this set! She had shared it on her Instagram stories and I had to have it. I will say, I'm not sure if it may just be I have the wrong size or what, but I feel like it definitely doesn't look as cute on me as it does her. I am pretty in between a small and medium and say it runs about half a size big on me. The sweater is super cute and can definitely see myself styling it in multiple different ways this fall. As for the shorts, they do look a bit awkward on me, but they are very comfy, and will just use them to lounge in.

Amazon prime color black cardigan

Colorblock cardigan

SIZE: M

FIT: True to size

REVIEW: As someone who is always cold, having cardigans on hand has been a must for me. I love the patchwork on this cardigan and decided to go with a more neutral color pallet so I can throw it on with multiple different outfits. It's pretty soft and cozy and can definitely see myself wearing this all fall. This also comes in a few different colorways as well!

Let me know down below which item was your favorite! I hope you all have a wonderful day and as always, thank you for reading!

xoxo,

Amy

Royal Blue Ruffle Sleeve Dress

FUN FACT: this was my dream color for my prom dress! Unfortunately, I didn't end up finding a dress that I love in this color for prom, but I did find this adorable mini dress number that's perfect for date nights or twirling in the park!

Happy September!

Even though this month kicks off the start off fall, here in the Carolina's, but we probably won't see cooler weather until maybe the end of October. Until then, flowy dresses like this one, are my go-to for the days I have to go into the office.

I had picked up this dress a couple weeks ago from Amazon and it is now up there with one of my favorite pieces! This dress is so comfortable and I cannot get enough of this beautiful blue color. I have been wearing this dress with flats for work, but also think it'll be a great option for future date nights with some fun heels! This dress is less than $25 and comes in four different colors. The fit is a bit big on me, I got my usual size medium, but with the dress having a flowy boho look, I feel that it's fine that it runs a bit large.
