10 Socially Distant Ways to Celebrate the Holidays

It's the holiday season and even though the holidays are looking a little different this year, there are still some safe ways to enjoy a little bit a Christmas joy this year. Now that we're in flu season and with numbers continue to rise with COVID it's so important now that we stay safe, wear our masks, and stay away from others as much as possible. If you're looking for some ways to safely celebrate the holidays this year, I've rounded up some socially distant ideas to get into the holiday spirit for you all!

'Tis the season! I know the holidays are looking a lot different for many of us right now and with 2020 being such a tough year it can be hard to get into the Christmas spirit. I know my brother and I had made the difficult decision to not see our parents this year for Christmas as the numbers continue to rise we figured it'd be too risky for the four of us to get together. As unfortunate and sad as it is, I know it's for the best and better safe than sorry. On the bright side, I'm able to hit up the after Christmas sales for their gifts this year and will have a little extra time shopping for them.

Even though holiday plans are having to shift this year and many of us will have to celebrate them virtually, there are still plenty of ways to safely get into the holiday spirit. I've rounded up 10 socially distant ways to celebrate the holidays in today's post.

1. Bake Christmas cookies

Is it really the holidays if the house doesn't smell like a warm sugary wonderland? Breakout your favorite cookie recipe and bake up treats for yourself and your loved ones to drop off at their doorstep. Trader Joe's currently has a few great pre-mixed cookies in store if you don't want to find a recipe and make it from scratch! 

2. Drive around and look at Christmas lights

There's something about Christmas lights that make me all giddy and feel like a little kid again. Hop in your car with some hot cocoa in hand and drive around to see the Christmas lights in your neighborhood. I'm sure it'll get you right into the holiday spirit!

3. Have a Christmas movie marathon

Home Alone, Elf, Santa Clause... Gather all of the childhood classics and your favorite snacks and binge-watch all of your favorite holiday movies. I actually just watched Elf for the first time last week! It's such a cute movie and def got me into the Christmas spirit.

4. Send out Christmas cards

Sending annual Christmas cards is one of my favorite things to do during the holidays. There's something so special about getting a handwritten card, especially in the age of all things digital. If you want, look up to see if you can send a holiday card to a hospital near you to thank the healthcare workers for all they've done during this pandemic. Just because it's the holidays doesn't mean COVID is letting up and I'm sure they'll appreciate the little bit of holiday cheer.

5. Have a virtual holiday cocktail hour/gift exchange

Safe to say holiday cocktail parties aren't going to be a thing this year but that doesn't mean you still can't enjoy a festive drink and catch up with your friends virtually. Sure it's nothing compared to being in person, but at least this way you don't have to worry about paying for an Uber home!

6. Show some extra appreciation to your local delivery drivers

Delivery drivers are already overworked during the holiday season but add a pandemic where people are online shopping more than ever to eliminate going outside you can only imagine how hard it can be on them. Show them some extra appreciation by leaving some snacks and treats out for them or just even a simple thank you note. I'm sure it will go a long way.

7. Build a gingerbread house

A holiday classic! Make a festive holiday drink, turn on some Christmas music and spend some time putting together a gingerbread house with your quarantine crew! Get one for each person and you can turn it into a gingerbread house competition!

8. Dress up and celebrate at home with your quarantine crew

If you're like me then you love getting dressed up for the holidays. I mean, velvet, sequins, and faux fur? What's not to love? Switch it up from your comfy sweats and get dressed up with your quarantine crew to take some fun holiday photos, eat a festive meal together, for a virtual zoom holiday party, or simply just because. It's the little things.

9. Take a virtual SkillPop class

From holiday hairstyles to learning to embroidered ornaments to cookie decorating, there are a wide variety of SkillPop classes you can take to help you get into the Christmas mood. Classes range from $20 - $25!

10. Shop for your loved ones and support some local small businesses

No surprise that the pandemic has taken a toll on small businesses this year. Consider shopping small this year for your Christmas shopping! I put together a gift guide featuring some of my favorite small businesses if you'd like to check that out!

Christmas Gift Guide for the Tech Lovers

 

Gadgets and gizmos are aplenty! Shopping for a tech lover in your life? Check out my round-up of my picks for some Christmas gift ideas. I'm covering gifts ranging from stocking stuffers to splurge-worthy gifts. Many of these items are items Christian and I have owned and love. Here are some highlights:

Mavik Mini Drone - Christian purchased this for our Peru trip earlier this year and it was so cool capturing Peru from a different point of view. We love that it's so compact and can easily be packed away in a backpack.

WebCam Cover - Raise your hand if you or someone you know currently has a piece of paper covering their webcam right now... guilty. This little webcam cover would be a great stocking stuffer and would look a lot better than a piece of paper taped onto your computer.

Bluelight Glasses - Many of us have shifted to working from home or online schooling thanks to Miss Rona. Save them some eye strain and gift them some blue light glasses this Christmas! You can find a variety of them on Amazon in a variety of styles!

Digital Photo Printer - If you have that one friend who's always snapping photos then this little camera would be a cute gift idea! It's essentially like a Polaroid camera in terms of you take a photo and it prints out instantly! 

Phone Case - I feel like you can't really go wrong with a cute phone case! Baublebar has some cute personalized ones, Casetify has a great selection of iPhone cases and OtterBox is my personal favorite since they carry great protective phone cases for Samsung phones as well!

Christmas Gift Ideas for Parents

 

Parents. They're one of the hardest people to shop for and if your parents are like mine then they literally have everything or they yell at you for spending your money on them. Every year my brother and I are always teetering back and forth on what to get our parents and usually go the sentimental route for them.

Today I've recruited my parents to share some gift ideas with you all! Many of these items are either their favorite items they've been gifted or own and think would be great gifts. I will also include some DIY gifts down below because you can't go wrong with something handmade or sentimental for parents.

GENERAL GIFTS FOR PARENTS

Nespresso Machine

I feel like if you want to do a combined gift for your parents or significant other parent's, and you are able to, then consider splurging on a bigger gift that they can both enjoy. This Nespresso Machine has been a hit in our household to make delicious lattes at home every morning. If your parents are avid coffee drinkers this would make a great gift and to take it up a notch you could throw in a set of matching mugs or your favorite pods. 

My Family Cookbook

Have all of their family recipes put together in one book to pass down for generations to come. This cookbook allows you to write in all of your favorite recipes and would be a great gift to give. Call up all your aunties and grandmothers for their favorite recipes and fill in the first few pages to get the book started!

Kindle

For the parent who loves to read, travels a lot or wants a library full of books but not the space, then the Kindle would be the perfect gift. You could even include a card with a few of your favorite books as suggestions or books you think they would like. Christian has one and uses it daily!

Who doesn't love a good cheese board? This one is so sleek and would be a great gift for the parents who love entertaining or just in general! Want to take it a step further? SENTIMENTAL / DIY  IDEAS FOR PARENTS

Still stuck on a gift idea? When figuring out a gift for my parents or significant other parent's I like to go towards the side of sentimental or DIY. As nice a shiny new fancy coffee machine is, sometimes the best gifts are the ones that come from the heart. These gift ideas are also great if you are shopping on a budget!

FAMILY YEARBOOK 

I've actually started gifting this to my mom every year for the past few years. Essentially you gather all of your family photos from the past year and compile them in to a book! I make mine through Shutterfly, and it's super easy to plug in all of the photos and add text. This is a great way to sit down at the end of the year and look back on everything that's happened. Since my brother and I have moved out and live further away from my parents, this is also a great way for my parent's to have photos of us and see what we've been up to! You could also do it scrapbook style and hand create the family yearbook yourself too!

BOX OF COOKIES

Who doesn't love a box of home baked cookies? Get their favorite cookie recipe or two and bake them a box of their favorite treats! I gifted these to Christian's parents last year and they were a hit! His parents are Peruvian and with Christian's help I found a Peruvian cookie recipe to recreate and package them up in a cute festive tin! 

A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT

In the age of all things digital more pictures are taken on cell phones but are rarely printed. I think it would be fun to reach out to a local photographer and gift a family photoshoot to your parents. This way they can have nice, professional photos to look back on and you can even take it a step further and offer to pay for a few of their favorite prints so they are able to hang them up around the house!

OK is it me or is buying gifts for the men in your life 10x harder than buying gifts for women?? I mean, you can buy some cute fuzzy socks and a throw blanket for a girl and she would be over the moon about it.... what's the equivalent for men??

Ours is a map of Charlotte since it's where we met / currently live and think this would be great to continue to get a map of each place we live at when we move!

Personalized Song Lyric Records - This is such an adorable piece and think this would be great if the two of you have a special song. This custom piece features a record and song lyrics written around it. This would also be great for newlyweds to have lyrics of their first song written on it! 

Fart Extinguisher - Hate to break it to ya ladies, but men stink. After living with my boyfriend you get to learn to not only live with him but his body odors as well.... This candle is hilarious but also very functional! 

Jack Black Lip Balm - This lip balm is by far the best lip balm ever! Give your man the gift of soft kissable lips with these lip balms. PS Lemon Basil is the best.

Heated Massage Gun - OK this one is a bit of a splurge, but so worth it in my opinion. If your man is always asking for back massages then this would be perfect for him. All you have to do is snap on one of the massage heads and let the device do its thing. No more having your hands cramp from trying to massage his shoulders.... so really a gift for the both of you. 

Champion Men's Sweatpants - ok, what guy doesn't like a good pair of comfy sweats? They come in a variety of colors and they look pretty snazzy on if I may add.

Stormtrooper Game Controler Holder - If he's a Starwars fan and a gamer then this would be the perfect gift for him! Let him proudly display his controller and get it off of your couch with this cute little holder. 

RGB Gaming Mouse Pad - Not sure what's the reason why gamers love RGB so much, but they do. This mouse pad is massive and if he's a PC gamer then he'll appreciate this, trust me. 

Sennheiser Gaming Headphones - If you're looking to splurge this year then Christian suggests getting him these gaming headphones. This company doesn't spend a whole lot of money on jazzy features such as lighting up and surround sound so they really focus on providing great sound quality. Christian says the key feature here is a wider soundstage.... whatever that means lol. 

Game Cube Prints - if you're looking to spruce up their game room then these prints would be a great gift to give! I love the look of these prints and Christian approves. 

Nintendo Switch - thanks to quarantine it seems like everyone and their mother seems to have a switch now, BUT if he doesn't have one already then this would be a great opportunity to gift him one! Not only can he play games by himself, but he can also doc the switch you can play with him if you like! 

Joy-Con Charging Doc - He already has a switch? Why not gift him this joy-con charging doc so he can make sure everything is all charged and ready to go at all times

Game Console Phone Case - I personally think this is pretty neat and would be a great stocking stuffer as well! This phone case looks like an old school game boy!

A Stylish Pullover - not sure why, but gifting clothes to my dad is always my go-to. My dad has several of these half button/half-zip pullovers and loves them! The Banana Republic is my favorite place to shop for clothing for the men in my life, but J.Crew Factory and Old Navy are great options as well!

Fountain Pen - Christian actually has this pen and I swear it makes me feel 10x fancier every time I use it. This pen writes like a dream and has a nice bit of weight to it. In a year where we all practically lived in sweatpants, it's nice to add some boujee elegance to our lives. 

Personalized Wallet - How sweet would it be to gift your dad a wallet with an engraved note in it? This wallet is made with genuine leather and has all of the necessary compartments to carry everything he needs with him.

Ninja Foodie Grill - If your dad likes to cook or even likes to grill then this is the gift for him!! This device lets you grill items indoors without the smoke. On top of that, you can use it as an air fryer and bake in it as well. We personally have this and 10/10 recommend.
